Cog Train

I got to add cog train to my growing resume of new transport methods used on this trip (previously experienced international ferries and high speed trains). A cog train is like a normal train, but it can go up really steep hills as well. For the steep sections the train has a cog wheel on the axle which locks onto the teeth on the track. These things are all over switzerland. Somewhere I read that Switzerland has the densest rail network anywhere in the world. The fact that it is largely covered by high mountains makes this even more impressive. At many ski resorts in the alps, there are cog trains which take you up the hill in addition to chairlifts, cable cars and gondolas.
